The Amazon faces a state of emergency due to the continued growth of deforestation and more recently, by the COVID-19 crises, causing ecological, economic and social collapse with global consequences.
Sense of urgency
August 10 and 11 this year were marked by the so called 'Fire Day' a criminal demonstration in support of Jair Bolsonaro.
Demonstrating their belief that Brazil does not need Germany and Norway to protect its biodiversity, large landowners started fires across various parts of the Brazilian rainforest, adding to the devastation of the Amazon.

The good news is that there are solutions and concrete results!
The Friends of the Amazon Institute - iAMA was created asa private non-profit institution, headquartered in Portugal, formally registered in the city of Porto, in March 2020.
iAMA is the result of a long work, started in 2019, during the crisis generated by the increase in deforestation in the Amazon and its main strategy is to mobilize resources, through donations from citizens, foundations and private companies, to support practical action projects aimed at reducing deforestation and poverty in the Amazon, with a special focus on indigenous peoples and traditional populations of all 9 countries in the Amazon Basin.
iAMA also aims to create a space for high-level debates, in the quest to contribute to an agenda of actions for the sustainable development of the Amazon, independently of political party positions and with a strong foundation in science.
The Friends of the Amazon was conceived as a plural and open initiative, capable to host different initiatives and networks that work in the nine countries of the Amazon.

Let’s protect the Amazon and its natural richness (Açaí berry, manioc flour, andiroba oil etc.), its peoples (traditional knowledge and ancient wisdom) and its global importance (rainfall production and climate regulation).

All this makes forests worth more standing than cut.

How does it works?
The strategy is to scale up the methodology implemented and improved by the Sustainable Amazon Foundation (FAS), since 2008, within 11 million hectares and with 40 thousand people in the Amazon forest.
Using well-established networks and acknowledges partners, such as COICA and SDSN-Amazon, which mobilize 600 organizations, we intend to foster and expand best practices in sustainable development for other areas in the Amazon.

The range of these networks and their partners enable to implement a participative and inclusive bottom-up approach by identifying communities’ demands and opportunities in order to co-design a cohesive development model within a sustainable forest-based economy to enable conservation and prosperity to the Amazon.
